Wallbeds Provide Answers
by Furnishings/Interiors
In the early 1900s, Murphy Beds (wallbeds) were a necessary furnishing in many U.S. homes and apartments because of the large influx of families flocking to the already crowded cities to find work. Living space was hard to find, and expensive. Therefore, multi-use rooms became very popular.
The old style Murphy Beds were not known necessarily for comfort and style since they were little more than a metal bed frame with a wire mesh base and thin mattress in a double closet door. By the '50s suburbia was discovered. With businesses and families taking advantage of the open countryside, the need for these space savers declined. Now, 40 years later, America is rediscovering the Murphy Bed.
Suburbia is now an hour's drive or more each way to work. The trend now is for many of us to settle for a bit less living space in favor of less commuting time and better access to city life and leisure activities. Of course, living close in means creating maximum use of minimum space, such as having a guestroom, office, den, or living room serve as a multi-purpose room. The alternative is $20,000 and up for an additional room. Enter the New Generation of Murphy Beds the modern Wallbed.
This space saver has been luxuriously reinvented using a conventional boxspring and mattress to insure total comfort and support. The Wallbed fits right up against the wall and may be accompanied by a wide selection of wall unit modules such as a wardrobe closet, drop-open secretary/computer desk, or bookcase entertainment centers to name a few. Do-it-yourself kits are available. Guest rooms, kids rooms, vacation homes, apartments, condos, and hotels are perfect uses.
The Wallbed is featured in a wide variety of wood finishes and crayon-proof laminates. Style choices run from contemporary, to southwestern, to traditional, and are made to order in twin, double, queen, as well as extra-long sizes. Custom designs are also available. Europa, the top of the line, recently introduced, is a beautiful European-inspired model boasting six coats of hand-rubbed lacquer similar to a luxury car finish.
Wall-Beds Plus is behind this resurgence.
