Murphy Beds Nationwide

Maximize space with Murphy beds
by The Calgary Sun

Murphy’s Law says that, no matter how large your new house, you’ll need one more room than you actually have to fit your guest room, home office, workout space, etc.

The obvious solution, then, is a Murphy bed, which will allow you to maximize your space without sacrificing form or function.

Space is a key commodity in Calgary’s tight real estate market, particularly with the huge condominium market.

“Everybody has a space issue nowadays, and they have these beds taking up 65 square feet of space even when they’re not used very often. That’s not cost-effective given today’s cost of real estate.”

Nagel says technology has made Murphy beds both more practical and accessible to the average consumer.

“Years and years ago, they used to be very heavy and cumbersome,” he explains. “Now, if balanced correctly, they’ll weigh between two and five pounds on the end — fingertip light, designed for use by youth and seniors.”

Jutting only about 16 in. from the wall, Murphy beds offer as much or more support as would a traditional mattress and boxspring without needing a boxspring, saving yet more space for the homeowner.

“You can pull the bed down nightly or just for guests,” Nagel says. “Then the pillows, bedding — the whole nine yards can be folded away, literally ready to go for next time.”

To protect your investment, Murphy beds are removable, leaving only five screw holes in the wall to be patched, so even renters can take advantage of the product.

The best part of the modern Murphy, though, is probably the design.

“They’re like furniture — easily attractive enough to be a design focus for any room,” Nagel says.

“They can look like paneling, or there’s an armoire style that’s very popular, or they can be part of a built-in, with bookcases and cabinets,” he says.

“We can do every material from Melamine to cherrywood.”

Costs generally start at about $1,900 and range upward, depending on the styles and materials you choose, and you can choose between single, double and queen-sized.

And having Murphy means you’ll have ESP.

“Essential Space Planning — that’s what we do for clients,” Nagel says.
