Murphy Bed's Popularity is on the Upswing
by the Fort Meyers News-Press, March 2004
After nearly two decades of fretting and fuming over her son's messy bed and bedroom, Millie Browning finally has found the perfect solution in a century-old invention — a Murphy bed.
"The bed folds up into the wall, and the room looks perfect all the time," says Browning. "No one's yelling at him to pick up or make his bed, because it's already made."
The Brownings had theirs installed in January for 19-year-old Lucas, who felt cramped in his bedroom when he had friends over or had to do homework. "Now he's got space," Browning says.
The bed-that-folds-up-into-the-wall is named after William Murphy, who first patented the idea around 1900. Other names for this type of device are wall bed or panel bed, but whatever it's called, the result is the same — more space in a home.
The Murphy bed industry often matches the ebb and flow of the national economy. When home prices are high and money is tight, people look for ways to maximize minimal space.
The Murphy beds found in stores today are not the ones that have appeared as gags in countless TV shows and movies over the years. No one gets folded up and trapped in a Murphy bed.
Today's Murphy bed is often a more high-tech affair — using anti-rust coatings, metal coils to control how fast the bed opens and specially designed mattresses that keep the stuffing from settling while stored upright.
Typical customers these days include seniors downsizing to condos or smaller homes.
